BBC Lifestyle continues its food fetish with a new season of The Great South African Bake Off.
Season 4 premieres this year and the search for delicious bakers is on.
Rapid Blue will be producing again and the format remains the same: 12 amateur bakers compete in a weekly showdown until one wins the title of South Africa’s Best Amateur Baker.
If you aren’t familiar with the concept, here’s a close-up on the finer details, followed by info on how to apply:
Each week the contestants face a different baking discipline that they must master, from cakes to bread to pastry – these become progressively more difficult as the weeks go on.
Each episode holds three challenges that the bakers must tackle and the least successful leaves each week.
The three baking challenges are:
Testing the bakers’ personality, creative flair and baking ability, the main challenge here is to produce something rustic and altogether home-made-looking.
It’s in this test that the contestants get to show off their tried-and-tested hand-cooked bites.
This challenge separates the wheat from the chaff.
Take one basic recipe, with the same ingredients and instructions, and ask our bakers to produce the finished product… sound easy?
Well, any variation on the finished product will be a result of their own technical knowledge and experience – or lack thereof.
Bakers are laid bare in this task and this is where the pressure gets intense.
The oven gloves are off in this final challenge where the bakers are able to showcase their depth of skill and talent.
The complexities of this task call for a professional standard in taste and appearance. Are they up to it?
The judges will be looking for the most impressive and elaborate creations – that taste first-class too.

You need to be 18 or older on 3 April 2023.
You must be an amateur baker, so your main source of income must not derive from commercial baking in a professional environment. You’ll find more about this on the application form.
You need to be available for filming between 3 April 2023 and 31 May 2023.
